English 4 is designed to provide students with reading and writing skills needed for college-level work. The focus is on a refinement of academic, claim-based writing; higher level research skills; organized and polished presentation skills; and the critical analysis of literary and informational texts.
In addition to our focus on British literature, in Humanities English 4 we will be working in tandem with your government/economics classes on cross-curricular assignments and units designed around current events. In the Academy, we are committed to providing students hands-on, experiential learning that requires problem solving, cooperative learning, research, writing, and communication/presentation skills. In a typical year, we have two major Academy simulations.
This is also the year for the Senior Project. The Senior Project is a year-long, career exploration project, which will be a component of English 4/4AP and your government/economics class. We will begin working on the Senior Project in September, and students will present their projects in front of a panel of community members in May. It is important to emphasize that the Senior Project is a graduation requirement. Students must pass all aspects of the Senior Project in order to graduate.
The goal and purpose of Humanities English 4 is to hone students’ critical reading and analysis skills, to prepare students for college-level writing and research, and to solidify their communication and presentation skills so that they can be successful in college and beyond.
Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs):
Quarter 1- Quarter One’s goal will focus on identifying and using effective voice and tone and on writing a narrative essay for college and/or scholarship applications. In all of our writing this year, we will be working on stylistic maturity – i.e. vocabulary, syntax, support, organizational structure, detail, etc.
Quarter 2- In Quarter Two, we focus on honing our critical/literary analysis skills as we study the texts of our unit on dystopian literature. We will also work with your government class to research issues and current events.
Quarter 3- In Quarter Three, we continue honing our critical analysis skills, focusing on informational and rhetorical texts both historical and current. We also focus on the research section of the Senior Project in this quarter.
Quarter 4- In Quarter Four, we turn our focus to the speaking and listening standards and the Senior Project presentation.
