Academic Peer Tutor: Mathematics

Candidates will take part in a tutor training course to help guide them in the practice of supporting students through questioning strategies, identifying points of confusion, explaining in alternate ways, and recapping learning. Tutors will develop the ability to lead small groups in mini lessons or activities. Supervising teacher will work closely with tutors; offering suggestions, feedback, and maintaining clear expectations to help the tutor develop their craft. Candidates should have a desire to help other students, and be ready to engage with all students.

Tutors will participate in one Flex per week to support Targeted Intervention, as determined by their Course Instructor and Supervising Teacher. Tutors will have the opportunity to take part in an after school peer tutoring program. Tutors will have the opportunity to go on field trips to middle schools to work with students. Successful Tutors will walk away from the program with a letter of recommendation and the ability to tutor outside of NJUHSD.

Prerequisites

Minimum of one course in math sequence with a B or better or teacher recommendation.
Students intending to pursue a future in a STEM field are strongly encouraged to take part in an Academic Peer Tutor: Mathematics Program rather than a standard Peer Tutor. This will be a highlight of academic service on student transcripts. Tutors will participate in one Flex per week to support students. Tutors will have the opportunity to take part in an after school peer tutoring program. Tutors will have the opportunity to go on field trips to middle schools to work with students. Successful Tutors will walk away from the program with a letter of recommendation and the ability to tutor outside of NJUHSD.
