NU Connection is a non-profit organization that is wholly dedicated to supportingthe students, families and staff of Nevada Union High School. Our mission is to support programs that maximize the welfare of all Nevada Union students, and former communication between school, community, and parents with the goal of giving all students the opportunity to succeed. Some of the needs NU Connection has helped fund to date include A.V. equipment in all classrooms, white boards for the math program, pottery wheels, an upgrade to the sound systems for the football field, recycling bins around campus, nutritional snacks for all students during standardized testing, resurfacing of the swimming pool, new signage around campus and the digital Marquee.

One of the ongoing programs NU Connection supports is the NU Clothes Closet, a boutique-like space on campus where at need students can shop for free for clothing, shoes, jackets, toiletries, and backpacks. The NU Clothes Closet was started 14 years ago when it was brought to my attention that there was a student on campus in desperate need of shoes and clothing. It came to mind that if there was one student in such need, there could be others. I approached the principal and asked for a space on campus where I could open up a boutique. When the Clothes Closet first opened wer were seeing 2-5 students per week. Over the years that number has grown to 10-25 per week. NU High School currently has 48 homeless students. Referrals are not just for students from families who are struggling financially, but all NU students who don't have a good support system at home and could benefit from some TLC. Our goal for the Clothes Closet is to help boost self-esteem of all the students we serve, and provide emotional support to.

Although the number of students benefiting from the NU Clothes Closet continues to gro our funding is decreasing. We were primarily funded through the scrip program, but with SPD Market the only current participant in the program, our income has been dwindling. Consequently, we rely more and more on private donations. It is our hope that NU Connection can continue to operate the NU Clothes Closet, and support other needs of the school. Please consider a donation to NU Connection today.

Sincerely, Kimberly Carnahan, President NU Connection, founder and manager  of the NU Clothes Closet.
