Parent involvement in student growth in a secondary school environment is crucial to your student's education, experiences and overall stability. We encourage you to be involved and partner with us to help your student navigate high school with the most positive outcome, ensuring their success tomorrow. There are many opportunities to be involved. Check out the "Get Involved" tab to see where you might be very involved in school culture and opportunities to work with other parents and students.
We have three formal events for all parents to participate and we encourage your participation even though your student is now in high school. The more involved you are with your student's education, the better changes are for their overall success. For parents of students currently enrolled, we host a Freshman Parent Orientation Night before school starts in August. This evening is very important to attend to get both you and your student started on the right foot. We talk about all the things you need to know as a parent to help navigate your student's routine. Information about Chromebooks and Chromebook insurance, students schedules, bus transportation, school communication, food services, and all the opportunities that NU offers, are all shared at this presentation in the NU Theatre. If your student is enrolled (please enroll your incoming Freshman for the next school year by March 1, annually), you will be in our student database to receive an invitation to this event.
Our second formal event is Back to School Night. While you may think that this is not a night you need to attend for a high schooler, it is an opportunity to meet all of your student's teachers, find out about the classes they are taking, which includes "what is Advisory class?", "what will my student learn in flex?", and probably most importantly, what are the expectations of each teacher in their class so that my student may excel and how can I maintain communication with my student's teacher. These things are so important to success for your student. In addition, we will have tables set up for parents to sign up for the parent opportunities listed in the "Get Involved" section. Back to School Night is a night for all four grade levels. It shows your student that you are interested in their education and success, so come on out an join us!
Thirdly, we offer NU Preview Night for parents / guardians of incoming freshman students in the next school year. This is the only event we offer in mass for parents to take a good look at NU and it's offerings. It is early in the calendar year, second semester, in order to share everything 'NU' and answer questions you may have. We have counselors and registrars at the event to encourage you to enroll your student no later than March 1st for the next school year!
Please check out all of the opportunities and information in the list to the left! We are proud to have you as part of our Nevada Union community!
